Varicose veins are the bulged and ropey-looking raised veins that appear on the legs. They are caused by high blood pressure in the superficial veins in the leg causing the veins to weaken and bulge, due to the blood pooling. This is also referred to a reflux or venous insufficiency. Symptoms associated with varicose veins include fatigued or heaviness in the legs, some may experience restlessness or night cramps. The skin can change color, become irritated, or sores could develop. If left untreated varicose veins can get worse over time and could lead to deep vein thrombosis.
At Bay Surgical Specialists, Dr. Collins will perform a procedure called RF-Closure or radiofrequency closure. This a simple and relatively painless procedure where the doctor effective closes off the vein causing the problem. The procedure will begin with the patient being given a minor sedative to help him or her relax. The surgeon will use an ultrasound to locate the start of the vein. Then he will insert a small wire into the vein and feeds it through the leg. The wire is then heated and the vein closes behind it as it is withdrawn. The patient may feel some pressure or a warming sensation. Once the wire is withdrawn, the doctor will put in a stitch and puts compression stockings onto the patient. The compression stockings will need to be worn for two days following the procedure. Before being allowed to leave, the patient will spend 5-10 minutes walking around the office to make sure he or she feels okay and that the stockings are on correctly. The patient will return to the office after the two days pass for the stitch to be removed and for an ultrasound to be performed to see if the treatment was successful.
The RF-Closure treats the cause of the varicose vein, which provides the best results for long term relief from this painful and unsightly condition. It will relieve the fatigue and heaviness associated with the condition. Also, patients will benefit from a quick recovery, returning to most normal activities within a day.
