Esophageal Surgery Q & A

Bay Surgical Specialists

What conditions are treated with esophageal surgery?

There are a number of conditions affecting the esophagus that can benefit from a number of surgical techniques.

  • GERD: Gastrointestinal reflux disease can sometimes be caused by a flimsy lower esophageal sphincter (LES). For severe GERD, surgery can restructure, tighten or install a supporting device to improve the juncture between the esophagus and the stomach, stopping the flow of stomach acid into the esophagus.
  • Narrow or obstructed esophagus: Strictures of the esophagus can be caused by deformation, growths or severe GERD. When the esophagus is so restricted that a person can not swallow effectively, surgery can be employed to open up the passage.
  • Motility disorders: When a person’s esophageal muscles are not able to contract enough or correctly to move food and liquid through the gullet, or if the LES does not open correctly to allow passage into the stomach, surgery can be used to correct any musculature issues.
  • Cancer: Surgery can be utilized to remove cancerous cells and growths from the esophagus.

What kind of surgical techniques are utilized?

Dr. Rossidis and his colleagues at Bay Surgical Specialists attempt to perform most surgeries laparoscopically as it makes the procedure and recovery easier for the patients. Esophagectomies are an effective way to remove tumors and growths from the esophagus to clear the passage. It can remove part or all of the esophagus. If only part is removed, the remaining parts are reattached so that normal eating and drinking can be resumed. Laparoscopic resections of the esophagus are also effective means of treating esophageal diverticular disease, which is when abnormal pockets grow on the esophagus. Radiofrequency ablation heats the tissue with a controlled burst of energy which typically removes tissue to a depth of one millimeter with one second of treatment. Radiofrequency ablation is used to treat cancerous and precancerous conditions including Barrett’s Esophagus, which is a precancerous condition caused by GERD.

How do I know if I need surgery?

Patients who think they have an esophageal disorder should seek medical assessment and advice as GERD and dysphagia, or a swallowing disorder, can cause significant disruption to normal day to day life. Dr. Rossidis will advise on the best course of treatment after an extensive exam and consult of a patient’s condition.
